FreeReadPress was founded as an alternative to the model on which most presses, even recent open-access presses, are necessarily based. First, all are works are free to download and distribute as PDFs; there is no significant commercial factor involved, and for us, as well as our writers, none whatsoever. For those readers who prefer a physical book, we have formatted texts to be sold at cost through a third-party printer. Second, we decided early on that our works should not be “career-enhancing” in any way. Thus, nothing here was written for, nor will result in “a line on a c.v.” (Readers who work in or around academia will understand exactly the implications of this!). We have done minimal editing, and have no “house style” on which to base it: our authors are all experienced; all have published widely in traditional presses; and none needs interference from a well-intentioned or annoying editor. We have provided a means for readers to comment on line; and our authors can make changes at any time, even in the printed form of their work.
Most of our authors have U.S.C. connections: Joseph A. Dane, John Carlos Rowe, and Percival Everett, are all in U.S.C.’s English Department; James R. Kincaid is former Aerol Arnold Professor of English; Richard Fliegel is a USC PhD and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
